Born in Bapaume on 11 September 1896, Léon Bronchart was a remarkable figure of the French Resistance. A railway worker with the SNCF, he made history as the only known railwayman to refuse to drive a train carrying prisoners during the German occupation.

During the Second World War, he actively took part in the Resistance and demonstrated exceptional courage and humanity in the face of Nazi persecution. In recognition of his efforts to help those who were persecuted, he was honoured as a Righteous Among the Nations by the Yad Vashem Memorial.

For his commitment to freedom and human values, he was awarded the rank of Commander of the Legion of Honour.

Léon Bronchart died at the age of 90 in Saint-Avertin (Indre-et-Loire). He remains a symbol of resistance, dignity and courage in the face of injustice.
